Have you ever wondered where the concept of unity came from? I did!
If you look up the meaning of this word in dictionary, it tells us that it is a condition of harmony; a continuity without deviation or change (as in purpose or action). The dictionaries however, do not tell us how the word unity came upon, where it was based on. Or what was the earliest demonstration of unity in the history of mankind?
When it comes to the earliest history of mankind, I would refer to the Bible for information. And there I found concrete examples how unity is first demonstrated in actions. In the works of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The Triune God is the best example of unity. And let me add, Is the essence of unity.
Now, let’s bring the concept of unity in the present time. Yep, I know that some of you maybe saying, where’s unity in today’s world? Well, if you look closer around and focus on the positive things you can celebrate about life, I am positively sure you’ll see that one of them is unity among friends, colleagues and relatives. As long as God is up there, I believe unity will always be here with us. So start looking, make it a habit to point out unity every time you bump into it and I bet you, you’ll feel good about life, about the people around you. And by the way, you’ll feel a hundred times better if you are within the circle of unity. I’ve been there several times and I am still counting

One of the best experience on unity I’ve gone through happened last Christmas. Our team at work which is composed of managers from different parts of the world (China, US, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, etc.) and Filipinos from our Cavite site location decided on a common goal. The goal is to make every kid in the Bukid Kabataan orphanage in Cavite feel very special for at least a day. Carrying the gifts and wearing our best smiles, we went and celebrate Christmas with all 44 unfortunate yet hopeful kids. Everyone happily took on a role to play, coaching kids, distributing gifts, facilitating games and more. Each one openly reached out and really spread love through their smiles and genuine concerns. The “child” in us ruled in that event as we gave our hearts out in the singing and dancing. We had fun playing, talking, and watching the kids, their reactions and their happy nature. Differences in race, in religion, in age, in social status, in nationalities were all forgotten. We were united through our common goal, by the good being within us. Yes, I think that the good “seed” (which came from God) within us reached out and tied us all together to celebrate life with our little brothers and sisters during that special day.
Another wonderful experience happened to me just recently, it was last week of May. The whole Philippine HR team of the company I work for joined our strengths together for one common mission. The mission: Clean up one of the public schools in Cavite to help prepare the institution for the upcoming start of classes this June. Together, we dusted all school furniture, books, floors and walls. Cleaned up the comfort rooms and painted the windows. It was a dirty, tiring job and yet we all have smiles in our faces while we went through the tasks and felt really good after seeing what our efforts have accomplished. Some of us felt happy not only because of what we have accomplished as a team but also of what we have shared together as a team. It felt like we’ve increased our individual strengths because of each other. It seemed like we’ve watered each others “seed of goodness” when we joined hands together in doing something good for the community.
I want to have and create more personal experiences on unity. I am OK to be hooked by this word and why not? It is helping me grow and brings me to God’s embrace more often. So here’s my personal prescriptions:
Fastest way to increase strengths and knowledge: Be ONE with others
Fastest way to grow in spirit: Be ONE with others in praising God through good deeds
You too, can create your tons of experience on unity and celebrate happiness it brings you everyday! All you need is to make that choice
Good day!
